Rueda is NW of Madrid, Spain. The area is predominantly known for the varietal Verdejo. The authorized grapes from the area are Verdejo, Viura, Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Garnacha.

Before 1970, Verdejo was typically used for a sherry-type of wine since it oxidizes quickly. Around 1970, investors and researchers came to the area and found a way to grow, pick and make wine from Verdejo without it oxidizing. Verdejo is typically vinified without using wood to retain the bright crisp flavors. However, there are some confident winemakers who have applied oak to the grape with success.
